Legal action launched to stop merger of massive unions

Legal action has been launched today to stop the merger of two huge unions, the CFMEU and the Maritime Union of Australia.

An amalgamation date is set for the 27th of March with various parties now scrambling to prevent the merger.

Master Builders Association is one of the parties launching action and their CEO, Denita Wawn, joins Ross Greenwood.

“We are concerned the two unions merging together¬†will have the capacity to further disrupt what is already a difficult environment for our membership.

“We’re of the view that where you put two very militant unions together that will now have a monopoly over the supply chain… that they will have a concentrated capacity to stop the products going to our sites.

“We know already… that they will take illegal action to stop productive activity happening on sites and at ports. We don’t want to see that.”

Ms Wawn says it’s “unfortunate” and disappointing the issue wasn’t dealt with in parliament last year while the focus was on same-sex marriage and the citizenship saga.
